Description

The Kwele carve face masks of four different forms with a thick edge. The four mask types represent three animals and a man. The animals – gorilla, elephant and antelope – tend to be carved in a stylized, geometric, and elegant form. The masks representing a human face are often carved within a heart-shaped border resembling horns. Masks were commissioned after the birth of a boy child. They represented a nature spirit who would accompany the child when he entered the bush school. It appears they were carved for display purposes and were often held during ceremonies
